For each level of production efficiency that you are below level 5 an additional 5% per level of production waste is involved. In your case at level 2 it is 15%.
That means that in your example the waste in the production is 27%.
Bringing this down by any means necessary should be your priority.
Another way to increase profits is through mining and refining and high standings. At the beginning ore is refined with 50-60% efficiency AND a station take (tax) of 5% of your recovered materials, once you have training in refinery and refinery efficiency as well as high standing, you can refine at up to 100% efficiency and pay no refining tax. As your refining and reprocessing skills get better, you can profitably substitute mining with low local buy orders on crappy mission loot and drone alloys and compounds and reprocess this stuff. (At least the ones that cant be sold). Advanced ore processing and scrapmetal processing skills can make it so that not a single mineral is lost through reprocessing. But this is very skill intensive. Takes about a year to get very skilled in industry.
As you noted the broker fees and the tax can cut into your profits (especially if your margin is low).
At the beginning buying BPOs and researching them to cut manufacturing cost, can also be a costly task. If you want people to come and buy your stuff, you need to have a selection of products, or work in a station where other producers are making stuff that compliments your produce. (Can be good to talk to the other producers and co-ordinate your efforts a bit to create a mini-hub to get more business for everyone. Usually such arrangements dont last long however.)
An alternative that can be cheaper is to find a good BPC provider and purchase well researched BPCs from them. I run a corporation that provides this service. We manufacture PERFECT PRINTS and have many faithful clients. Most such service providers specialize in a field.
Our main field is Tech 1 BPCs. We can provide you with any ammo/missile, any turret/launcher, any module, any charge/probe, any drone, any rig, and most ships (only 7 Battleships and the Small Barge are missing from our collection of Tech 1 BPOs) The Battleships that we have and most of the Revelations stuff is still in research and is not yet at below 0.01% waste (The smaller ships from Shuttle to Tier 1 Battlecruisers are only at 0.03% waste level). We estimate that all but the new ships will be at ME100 (i.e., 0.01% waste level by the end of January.
What makes our prints better than most however is not only the high ME level, but also an equally high PE level that cuts production time by 25%. This is not important when you manufacture just a few units every now and then, but if you are really into mass production, an extra 25% cut in time down from the 20% cut you can get with Industry level 5 is important.
Many simple low end Blueprints require much less research than we have put into our prints, if the purpose is just to manufacture items. But by the time you are advanced enough in industry and science to contemplate invention of tech 2 BPCs, you will want the BPC that you use to be of maximum quality in ME/PE and in runs. A little bit will translate into the tech 2 BPC.
If you are interested, I can sell you an inexpensive starter pack that will allow you to save 10-12% of the current waste, leaving you with only your production efficiency waste. It could be the beginning of a long relationship that would allow you to specialize in industry first and leave science for later. It would allow you to have a range of products at the cost of 1-2 BPOs. The BPCs will be cheaper than the minerals you are loosing now at ME0/PE0. (increasing your profit) ___________________________________________ Selling BPCs of almost all seeded BPOs. Lobster of Babel currently holds 641 of the 649 Tech 1 BPOs seeded. |
